#StompOut

By now, most people have heard the meaning of hashtag “Me Too” and most women and some men have lived the experience of being harassed in the workplace by those in authority.  Just belonging to the movement has given strength and empowerment rather than the meaning of victimized.  The awareness may lead to less situations of it happening or being tolerated by our society as a whole.

There is another movement that needs the same attention and needs its own hashtag; the experience of being bullied and the best way to respond to it.  We need a hashtag that can project strength for those experiencing it in the moment, for the instant recognition of just what it is.  If you are being singled out and bullied, what word or phrase would empower you?  I look back at the times it happened to me and my response was to lower my eyes and silently cry.  The wound to my soul was great with lasting scars.

The wounds are personal and they are deep and they hurt the character of both the giver as well as the receiver.  If I could have lifted my eyes and reflected my feelings with strength, maybe the situation would have changed for us both.  We need a word or phrase that can instantly call out the action for what it is.

Perhaps “#StompOut”

If you feel it, say it and feel the empowerment of it.  The more of it that happens, the louder you should be until it can no longer be ignored.  If you are the one they say it to, stop and think about what you just said and maybe you will understand the impact of the words you project.  You need to change that or bully will define your character.

Let’s make this a movement that can “Stomp Out” the harmful effects of bullying.

Reach For The Spice Of Life

Cinnamon, as well as many other spices we use to flavor our foods, actually have numerous health benefits when used regularly.  Besides making your oatmeal tastier, cinnamon can help lower your bad cholesterol (LDL) and raise your good cholesterol (HDL) and helps the body burn stored fat.  Regular consumption may lessen the effects of high-fat content meals by reducing the after meal blood sugar, aiding in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.  It helps muscle cells remove sugar from the bloodstream and has a positive effect on blood markers.

This amazing spice has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties and research suggests it may even help prevent the HIV virus from entering cells.  It can aid in clearing lung congestion and, like garlic, it can help fight bad breath and IBS.

Its antioxidant and free radical properties may slow the signs of aging and even slow the growth of cancer cells.  It can help with systematic inflammation, reducing headaches and arthritis and boosts circulation and energy by increasing blood flow.  Adding it to a warm, soaking bath can also alleviate muscle pain.  It can even assist women in the treatment of endometriosis, menorrhagia, uterine fibroids and cramps.

It contains epicatechin, compounds that boost brain neurons that, like dark chocolate, can assist with the treatment of ADHD, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s diseases and improve motor functions.  It can help increase muscle mass from satellite cells that surround muscles used to repair and restore tissues.  Even the cinnamon scent itself can boost brain function as well!

Cinnamon comes in ground powder, sticks, bark oil, and capsules and can be added to apple water, tea, coffee, oatmeal, tapioca, bakery items and endless other possibilities.  Be careful to use Ceylon cinnamon and NOT Cassia since Cassia has a high concentration which in large doses can cause liver toxicity and have blood thinning actions and can reduce the good bacteria in your gut.

With all the health benefits you can reap from regularly adding cinnamon to your diet, isn’t it worth a consideration?

Stop & Notice

They say live for the moments that take your breath away, but for me, all it takes is to actually pause and notice the blessings around me.  Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth, either financially or physically, but with each step of my journey, from childhood into the autumn of my life,  there have been those moments.

I sit here at my desk with my computer, and have a view out of my window of the beauty of nature, music on, and clothes on that make me feel good about how I look.  I’ve come far in my life, and I still have so much living I want to do.  So many articles left to write, and breathtaking moments left to create and feel.

I could focus on the bad, the heartache and the struggles, but if I do that, I would cheat myself out of enjoying the moments of my life.  The right now, and those precious memories I have in my mind are only enjoyed if I stop and look.  It’s like a favorite song, you enjoy it only when you hear it or think of it.  but it’s always there for you to enjoy when you do.

Recently I tracked down my daughter’s favorite childhood movie (she had long since wore out the VCR tape) along with my own.  I watched hers with her, and thoroughly enjoyed seeing how much joy it gave her as an adult.  It was thrilling for her, just as mine was for me when I watched the childhood favorite I had not seen in over 40 years.  Those are the moments.

The scent in the crisp air you can smell after the rain.  The picture of a loved one in a past era.  Hold these, they are important.  They feed your soul even if only for a fleeting moment.  That’s why they are there, stored for you like files on a computer.  But they can only benefit you if you stop and view them.  Can you stop and look and know that you are blessed too?

Thank you!

I’ve been through so much on this journey of life.  Some of it profoundly intense (both good and bad); but if I had to lose even one of those moments that take your breath away (and I have been blessed with many), I would not change a moment of my suffering.

The bad only serve to show the sheer beauty of the good and to give those who help a chance to feed their soul and let their lights shine through.  For each of the bad times, someone was there to help me get through it, leaving ripples of blessings in their lives.  Humanity needs that, especially now.

My hope is that there are very few that didn’t see my appreciation for them.  I do look back and value them.  They are blessings that, as memories, can still make me smile.  Thank you all for being there.  If our paths should cross again, I shall try my best to show you I do value you.

Thank you!

The Mess We’re In

At one point, students bringing cell phones to school was a concern in the forefront.  How innocent a problem it was.  It is no longer a distraction but an essential safety tool.  The stress level of students, faculty, and parents is at an inexcusable high.  School shootings are no longer a rare event and school safety is a top concern.

Parents with varying aged children who attend more than one school building feel the need to arm each of them with a working cell phone with that emergency in mind.  One school sends home a letter stating an empty .22 caliber firearm clip was found in the glove compartment of a school bus, while another has a student who has threatened to bring in a gun sits quietly dressed all in black through the school day and turned out his father’s gun was missing.

How do we get to focus on our own work as parents and how can we expect our students and teachers to concentrate on multiplication and adverbs when that fear crosses their minds?!

In the minds of those who’ve done the deed, there’s an anger there that has exploded and we need to understand the whys.  It’s the only way to stop it or at the very least slow the rate of it happening down.  The weapon, the access, and the full history including medications need to be examined.  It’s not a one answer problem.  Mental health and gun control are only parts of the puzzle.  Other factors do exist.  We need to see them in order to change things.

Make no mistake, this is the biggest on-soil terrorist threat we face at the present time.  For those who do the deed, there should be no privacy.  It should be lost with the horrific act.  Phone, patient and other history needs to be examined.  We may end up finding surprising common factors.

We need answers in order to go back to focusing on the task at hand instead of horrible possibilities.  Until that time comes, parents will arm their children with working cell phones regardless of whether they can afford it or not.

The Super Bowl

Today is the Super Bowl.  If you’re workplace is like most, you hear the excitement from co-workers whether or not you are a fan.  For those that are not, you are missing out on more than just a sport.  Team pride or team opposition can be a source of unity.  Those willing to be a fan of an opposing team find a source of strength to stand out tend to wear the team’s memorabilia with a smile regardless of the of the fallout.  That gives us all a chance to teach the next generation the true meaning of good sportsmanship and the ability to choose freely who you want to call your favorite team.

If you’re lucky enough to choose the team that crosses the victory line, cinching it in the last quarter and often in the last five minutes of the game, well there is nothing like it!  When you are, even moving across the country doesn’t change your loyalties.  You are a fan for life and now you are proud to be the opposition!   If time finds you later in life becoming a fan, you will look back at the thrill you missed in those workplaces with regret, I promise you.

Many people choose to broaden their horizons by checking out the opera or ballet, just to have the experience and to see if they might like it.   There is another option.  Check out the thrill of a sport.  You might surprise yourself.  Maybe you’ll even end up wearing a jersey of your own for the next Super Bowl.

Happy Holidays

In the recent years the battle has been plaguing our holiday season where many are offended by any holiday greeting that doesn’t include saying “Merry Christmas”.  Politically correct “Happy Holidays” are expressed to avoid offending anyone, especially those who do not believe in Christmas, or more specifically, Christ.  Unfortunately it offends those who feel strongly about Christmas being the true holiday expression.

There is a third option, of those of us that love Christmas and feel the magic of it both in spiritual and family traditions; but also would like to include the ones they, as well as others, enjoy also.  From the approaching Thanksgiving dinner they enjoy so much, to the celebration of New Year’s Eve they plan as well, “Happy Holidays” includes them all.

So when someone greets you with a smile Jesus would even be proud of, please feel the warmth it was intended to give.  And if you lack the holiday spirit because of your life situation, there are always things you can do in your community that can feed your soul by feeding that warmth to others.

Happy  Holidays!

Full Steam Ahead

Publishing this Website was one of the most exciting moments of my life, and like most big endeavors was followed by a time of fear that had me frozen out from the next step, and for a time period, I got nothing accomplished with it.  The more time that passed, the bigger the fear became.  Then I received some great advice to just set aside one day to accomplish one piece (or step) of what I needed to do instead of looking at it as a whole.  I started with the research for an article and by the time I was done, I had written the latest feature article, along with the makings of my next Thrive Global article that gives others the key to helping themselves.

Everything we do starts one step at a time that we have to decide to take, or nothing gets done.  Whether it is as as small as starting an exercising routine to the big projects we hope someday to accomplish, that one small step begins it and alleviates the pressure of accomplishing it and changes your focus to the present action.  Boy does it help, and I wanted to share that with you.  No matter who we are or what we do, there is always something new we will do that begins with that first step.  Forget the stress of accomplishing the whole thing.   Your focus will get there in the final stretch and by then you will be going full steam ahead.

The Calm Of Your Hand

With the holiday season upon us, between shopping, travel plans, and family gatherings, anxiety levels rise and your body reacts by producing a “fight or flight” chemical reaction.  These hormones put your body at greater risk for illness, high blood pressure and a multitude of other health issues.

Although burying your head in the sand and cancelling plans is one response, there are other more helpful ways we can choose if that is not a viable option.  If we apply simple yet effective measures to help the body cope, we reduce the production of those hormones which in turn helps reduce the anxiety that causes it.

Hand reflexology methods can be applied regardless of where you are, as long as you can spare just a few moments.  Each part of the hand is connected to different parts of the body.   The fingertip pads represent glans in the center of the brain.  Applying pressure to them can help with sleep issues such as insomnia.  The next set down on your fingers , corresponds to your neck.  Pressure to the inside area below your pinkies can help clear the lungs, bronchial, and chest.

Even if you don’t follow a reflexology guide, merely gently massaging your fingers and focusing on slower breathing can lower your stress response and help both your mind and body and possibly even head off a panic attack or tension headache.  Once you turn this practice into a habit, you may want to look into a reflexology chart and see what techniques you can use to improve a number of other health issues.

Every little bit you can do to keep you in control of how stress affects you gives you a better chance of enjoying those times, creating the positive memories you can look back on as a treasure.  Don’t you owe it to yourself to give it a try?

The Price Of Business

Not only are we connected world wide through the internet, but so are our businesses both with what we use and what we eat.  Many we take for granted, since they are available almost anywhere such as the toilet paper we use to the cereal and pizza that we eat.  We choose a brand by what we like and not necessarily by how it’s made.  Most of the time we don’t even know.

If we are a loyal customer we assume the company has us valued as much as their profits since without us, they would cease to exist.  Even our regulations such as FDA rules are suppose to be about keeping us safe.  So why is it that some countries ban things that others do not?  Many of us roll our eyes at the phrase “junk food” because most have indulged at one time or another.  But what about things we consume regularly that are labeled dangerous in one place or another?

Parents, you pour your children that bowl of cereal, and even when you choose lower sugar cereals (yay to you), there may be ingredients that are actually banned in other countries for their harmful effects on the body.  BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) and BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) which are commonly added to preserve freshness can cause cancer, kidney and liver damage, hair loss, behavioral issues and disrupt appetite and sleep.  They are just two examples of ingredients that are allowed in this country, but banned in most others.  Companies that do business in both, such as Quaker, Ritz, and Pizza Hut, to name a few, have products that are reformulated elsewhere.

Knowing an ingredient in their product is banned in one place, such as lead in paint in the United States, consumers should be able to believe their favorite paint brand would be sure to make it safe for everyone.  After all, the devastating effects of lead paint on children is common knowledge.  However, those same companies still add lead to the paint used in countries that have yet to ban it!  If you are a landlord and use paint on a regular basis, do you know the common practices of your favorite brand?  If you knew they added lead to the paint in different countries just because they could, would you still be loyal to them?  You should look before you ask yourself that question.

Where and how is your favorite toilet paper made?  Is it made by a company with horrible environmental practices and employing people with poverty level pay?  It’s time we actually looked as consumers and demanded companies actually made products based on the good of everyone involved.  We do have that power if we choose to use it.  When people realized food dyes were damaging (even though the FDA doesn’t deem it so), Kraft took food dyes out of our Macaroni and Cheese and proudly stated so in their advertisements.  We have the power.  The more we use it, the better and safer the world will be.
