Real Change

Message From:

So check this out, whoever knows me, knows I’m from the bottom. But truth be told, I don’t know what it’s like to be black. But one thing I do know, is the difference between RIGHT and WRONG. Regardless of what anyone says the black folks in this country have been through hells that none of us will ever know.

If anyone believes that this government cares about anyone of color, you are WRONG! Regardless the party you chose to claim from a political stand point, this system was made for the rich to get richer and the poor to stay poor. We as a people need to change this! The system has always been broken, because it’s based on greed and truly doesn’t understand what a human is worth.

As a white kid from the hood, I apologize for any wrong doing that’s from the people that have the same complexion I have. As a man, I’m with anyone that is willing to stand up for what is right, and to demolish the wrongs that have been going on for far too long. Police reform along with Government reform are just the icing on the cake.

It’s the souls that need to be reformed! Realize! If one’s soul isn’t involved, that person doesn’t truly care. I don’t care what HOOD you are from or what you claim!!!

Do We Get It Yet?

A friend of mine expressed his aggravation and puzzlement on why the protests are lasting so long. He thought 7 nights was long enough. “We get it. Protest but not all the destruction that has occurred”. I was puzzled about the destruction too and recently commented that on a news post to which another reader replied that maybe I didn’t truly understand their protest after all. He had a point.

I went about trying to explain to him the point they were trying to make, and opened my own eyes a little more in the process.

They are tired of being afraid of losing their lives simply because of the color of their skin. Racism is something we should be LONG past in this melting pot called America.

I went about trying to explain to him that, to the people who have been dealing with the racism year after year, 7 nights is nothing compared to what they’ve been living with. I told him it shows just how angry they are. I think they feel that if all they did was peaceful protest, it would just be ignored. They want us to understand that this all needs to stop. We can’t get that if we don’t have anything to feel that way about. It’s a demand for action. They have been dealing with life-threatening situations over and over.

They have lost lives with no end in sight simply because of the color of their skin. That doesn’t make it a free country for them and that’s wrong! They are correct, this needs to stop now. Their anguish, and desperation needs to be seen and felt. They are trying to show us the sheer velocity of what they are going through.

I could not condone violence or burning the store you get your milk and chips from, but maybe I understand it just a little bit more. This is on us all. We need to treat each other as fellow human beings who are no better than anyone else regardless of our skin color. We all have hopes and dreams. Isn’t that why we made Martin Luther King Jr Day a holiday?! It really is time we get it.

Just Chillin……

Some of us have spent our shelter-in-place time in high anxiety.  Many felt lazy not being able to function the way they had been; especially if they had a busy schedule before.  The rat race has often been difficult to keep up in, with down time being a distant dream.  Instead, idle time made them nervous and uncomfortable.  One only had to get a peek of the outside world to see the results.  People are more aggressive and mean, and it shows in their behavior.

If we were lucky enough though, we learned to add some quality Chill time that may have been missing or minimal before.  We found the time to simply conversate with each other, whether in person, FaceTime, Zoom,  or a phone call.  It was quality time and attention.  That is something we have gained through this.

There are even those who started researching ways to improve their health just in case they got hit with the virus.  Improving your health is always a good thing.  Many have gone online looking to learn new things with free webinars and courses or careers they now had the time to pursue.  It’s a time we can use to pause and reflect on our true goals and dreams.

One of the best parts of this time is learning how to enjoy just chillin with favorite music putting your feet up feeling simply you!  If you have experienced any of this, I urge you to hold on to whatever parts you valued, and make room for that when you resume what’s now being called “a normal life”.

Memorial Day

Most people make plans to celebrate Memorial Day with BBQ’s and beach days with family and friends.  This year was different for the majority of our country.  No matter how you spent it, take a moment to reflect on the brave men and women who lost their lives serving for the good of their country.  How selfless an act to give your life for others!

Let us take pause to reflect on that, for that is the true meaning and purpose of Memorial Day.  With appreciation, thank you to those who served their country and literally gave it their all.

Overblown

“Forgive them for they know not what they do”  The same people that are stating they believe this is all overblown may end up being some of the very ones that have to watch someone they care about struggle to gasp for a breath.  They are not going to be immune to feeling the anguish of realizing they could have been the carrier that gave it to them in the first place.  This virus isn’t affected by what you believe.  That friend that you’ve been with that was sick with what you brush off as a nuisance flu, may have turned YOU into the carrier  that brought it home to your wife.

This pandemic IS a big deal, just ask the medical profession.  They are risking their own exposure to treat patients without having the necessary protective gear.  They have gotten to the point of desperation that has made them take to social media begging the public for masks, gloves and sanitizers, on top of begging the government for more test kits.

Kudos to those having the patience and the strength while sick to go through the hoops it takes to even get tested.  They wait on hold for an hour, days to be told where to go, and then finding their way to the place that lead you to the testing site while handling you like you have the plague (they don’t want to spread it either).  After all that, they go home and wait day after day suffering and waiting for test results, consumed with thoughts of who they might have given it to and whether they will even survive.  Even those that were otherwise healthy (think of your worst case of the flu) may have to fight hard.  Yes most will recover, but they are not running out of beds and respirators because they are coddling patients.  It’s a question of survival.  Many will recover but some may go through a time they aren’t sure of whether they will.

All of us are potential carriers right now walking around others not knowing who we see that we might pass it to. That hard working Mother of four that has to put that item back you handled but changed your mind about and just put down in a different isle.  It could be the cashier that has to scan your cold sweating bottle of soda after you coughed in your hand (not being dramatic, after all, you have allergies so that must be all it is) and then handled it.  Are you okay with being the link that causes her to lose her asthmatic mother that takes care of her children while she works?  Just because you will never know doesn’t make it any less of a possibility.  Your belief in it being overblown will not save anyone.

You don’t need to shop for home decor right now and some stores won’t close unless it becomes mandatory or unless their customers take this seriously and STAY HOME!  This isn’t about politics or your beliefs, it’s about saving lives and assisting the medical profession in keeping up with those that are sick so we don’t lose more people than we have to.

BE RESPONSIBLE!   Stay home if you can, in defense of others!

2019 – A Year of Rebirth

It has been a year full of challenges and changes for me.  I moved out of a town I had built a life in, to a town I knew no one but family.  For someone with PTSD and anxiety, that is no easy task.  New counselor (mental health treatment is important), new community connections, and just functioning outside the house were things that were extremely difficult.

I can remember how much energy it took to find the courage to walk to the post office around the corner to put in my change of address.  I was so proud of myself and feeling very silly for thinking that way.  I knew it was simply a baby step, but I knew it was at least a step.  Then the grocery store and local CVS to transfer my prescriptions.  I saw them as hard, but necessary steps that drained me to the core.

When I reflect on that, although I realize I have not yet managed to grab the proverbial brass ring, I have come far enough in this one year that I can be confident in facing my road ahead.  I genuinely want to be a better me in 2020 than I have ever been.  My New Year’s Resolutions are more structured goals that I will be pushing for until they become part of who I am.  I am indeed a work in progress, but no matter how slow it goes, I will keep taking those baby steps forward.

Sunrise

A friend of mine tried to explain the beauty of the morning to me.  It was special to him and he wanted to share it with me.   Although I joined him in enjoying it a time or two, I’ve just never been a morning person.

Those who know me, know I’m naturally a night owl.  I am more awake in the wee hours of the morning BEFORE my bedtime routine.  Five AM is a fable to me after finally falling asleep at two AM.

But I’ve seen it and the beauty it beholds:

I was a child; a preteen or a few years older.  I took a trip with my Father to my Uncle & Aunt’s  house in Vermont.  You would think it was not so great for my allergies to farm animals and my asthma.  But it was just that, that had me awake when the sun came up.  I was sitting up near the window, with breathing a challenge.  I watched out the window as the light slowly appeared and revealed the early morning mist over the fields.  It was so beautiful!  The rest of the world seemed asleep and mother nature was showing herself to me.  I felt connected, and it was something I have never forgotten.  It’s what morning people feel when they try to change your morning habits.

Oh, I have my intentions to do just that.  My bio’clock disagrees.  But if I’m giving up a better way to start my day just to have late night TV time, I’m cheating myself letting it win.  I will succeed in changing it at some point.

I have a life I’m envisioning and I’m working on getting there, even if the progress is at the speed of the turtle.  After all. he did win the race.

Being Thankful…

Now that Thanksgiving has passed, the Christmas shopping rush is on.  People tend to feel the pressure of the finances, the lists, and the crowds.  But take another pause.  Think about what you really are thankful for, beyond just Thanksgiving day.  The traditions you have carried forward from childhood, or even the traditions you have started with your own precious family.

Feed your soul with those thoughts whenever you start to feel overwhelmed.  The financial pressures will be there year in and out, and you will likely figure it out and last year’s pressures will be a distant memory.  But there are memories that will hold in your mind for years to come, and will be the ones that you hold very dear.  They are the little moments, the hugs of your loved ones, the scents of the pies you make that remind you of your childhood.

My grandson bragged to his friend how much he loved my pumpkin pies.  “Once you taste them, you’ll want to be here for Thanksgiving every year!”  I beamed with pride over that and let my mother know.  My response to him was that they were the same pies I grew up with.  I used to call her every year for the recipe because I always misplaced it.  This year when I called she assumed I was calling for the recipe.  It wasn’t.  I actually saved it in a good place but it wouldn’t be the same, making them without talking to her.  A tradition I will hold dear to my heart.

We all have something we can be thankful for, whether it’s the taste of a great cup of coffee, the warmth of your favorite sweatshirt, or even if it’s just the very breath we are able to draw.  Be still and feel it, and just be thankful.

Just A Little Bit Of Basil

Herbs such as Basil are used in kitchens everywhere to season meals with just the right touch.  But did you know they can be used for your health as well?  Basil has healing properties for both mind and body with some amazing benefits.

Basil, aka Saint Joseph’s Wort, is an herb belonging to the mint family.  Sweet Basil has a strong clove scent due to its high concentration of eugenol, which has antiseptic and anesthetic properties.  Lime and Lemon Basil have a strong citrus scent due to their high concentration of limonene, which has anti-cancer and weight-loss properties.

The eugenol and rosmarinic acid in Basil boost the brain’s production of dopamine and serotonin, which can be mood boosting.  Along with Ginseng, some studies suggest it may help the body adapt to stress and when consumed on a regular basis, Holy Basil can reduce anxiety and associated stress and depression in people with anxiety.  It can also help with mental clarity.  It shows promise in studies for Alzheimer’s disease as well.

Just putting fresh Basil in your salad can help insure the safety of your fresh produce with its antibacterial properties.  Its inflammatory benefits can relieve arthritis as well as many other health issues.

A nice hot cup of Holy Basil tea can help relieve congestion and respiratory issues as well as helping with your mind, mood, and stress.  So the next time you head to the grocery store, consider putting Basil on your list for the health of both your body and your mind.

Orange You Going To Love It?

At this point most people already know (and some accept) that food dyes are bad for us.  Some countries have even banned them from the foods they eat (although not us) and many choose their food after checking labels to avoid them.  Manufacturers use them anyway because it makes the food look more appetizing, cereals and boxed macaroni and cheese are perfect examples.  It makes sense that looking appetizing leads to sales and despite health risks, the bottom line is the profit.  Healthier natural options for color are more costly and that cuts into that profit.  Brands that do make that change use the “no food dyes” as a selling point.

What makes a lot less sense is how the consumer of pet food would ever decide they wanted to eat a food because of the added colors!  Wouldn’t “No added food dyes” make  the pet owners be more apt to purchase it the way parents choose the macaroni and cheese?

Your cat or dog doesn’t decide they like a food based on whether it contains red food dye number 40 or yellow number 5 but you as a parent knows it could lead to health issues that are costly both emotionally and financially.  So maybe not choosing the ones that contain them can send a message.  It is after all, the bottom line.
