The Union Issue – A Different Side Of The Coin

Union Workers

I was the child of a blue-collar worker that worked for a unionized corporate plant. He worked for the American Dream of home and family. We had a house because of it. He earned a living wage. There were difficult times, especially during s strike. It is not for those unwilling to make the commitment. He would be forced to work other jobs until the strike ended, a big deal they don’t agree to lightly. It impacts their families and trying to predict a strike’s length is fruitless. But it earned him a job with pride. We were a middle-class family.

Non-union workers

Fast forward to being an adult raising children, I became a middle-class blue-collar worker and took pride in the job I did. It was a wonderful company and I loved it there. We were asked if we wanted to vote to bring in a union. We were not pressured even once by the company. I spoke to my teammates (because that’s what we were) and we agreed that it was a company that cared about us. We were already content, so we voted no. I knew some of the ups and downs of a union. We didn’t need it, and we were happy with the vote turning out against it. The best part was a nod of approval to the company. It spoke volumes of who they were. We were happy…..until…..

The company was sold to a bigger corporation and we shifted to not being valued. “You should be grateful you work for such a big company” we were told. Step by step the things that made it such a great place to work were removed. “A happy worker is a productive worker” was no longer the heart of the business and the volume of production required for each worker was increased to the work of two plus. Talk surfaced about the need of a union, the previous vote now feeling more like a mistake. We were told they would shut the place down. A vote was never taken. We could not chance it.

Perspectives

There is good and bad about a union and many are either fans or opposed to them. It is all based on the perspective they have on what they know. So what should come out of this? Where is the middle ground so desperately needed to this issue?

For the Companies

If a company or corporation really wants to “walk the talk” of caring about the workers, perhaps they could take a look at the true value of those who work for them. Do it to the point they feel no need for a union. If threats are the deciding factor of a vote, what does that really say? When your workers can say “we see no need” then you can smile at a job well done at being leaders.

Perhaps you could find out what those who voted for a union felt and study the answers. If the company could use the answers as a learning opportunity to improve things for their workers, they would never have the need for a union. What an opportunity to learn what matters to the employees!

For the Unions

For the unions, look at the regretted votes and what their message in it is, to improve your services. Always strive to be the best allies of your workers without making it a power and dues money grab. You have a Noble purpose and perhaps you could pride yourself on making sure your workers feel that way. Then companies who really do not care will have the protection for the workers. It is a sad statement to say there are many of them.

So, where is the bottom line?

Employees are an investment, not an expense and deserve the respect of that focus. They matter, and it is your job to prove it. For many, the employee is also your customer. Is it because they cannot afford not to, or because they believe in you? The answer is important.

See The Soul

We all have a soul light, some just overlook it. But how does that reflect on who we are?

Listen to what they speak

If you interact with someone for the first time (or even after) are you looking at their differences of skin color? Can you look into their eyes, listen to what they speak? Could you see yourself talking to them over coffee about a joint project that could make the world a better place? If not, could you reflect on why, looking at yourself and not them?

What do you speak?

If your friend introduced you to someone who matters to them, what and who would they see? Would you present them with a “best behavior” front or would that truly represent who you are? What if they were of a different skin color? Would that change your response to meeting them? That’s what they are trying to show you any way they can. PLEASE ponder this and really look at not them, but you. That is the only way change occurs. It has to come from the heart. Examine yours. You can’t be true to you if you don’t really look.

We miss amazing connections

Everyone who has become a valuable friend and confidant was originally a stranger. Sometimes we miss amazing connections because we don’t see them in the light they had. That is our loss. If you meet someone and think less of them simply because of what you see and not who you see, you miss out on some incredible inspiration. There are jewels among them that are bright and beautiful.

Cheating yourself

You may be cheating yourself out of your destiny. We are all meant for something special. It only takes that one right connection. You have no idea who the universe will send for you. Considering yourself better than others may block that connection. Then the issue would really be you, not them. Is that who you are, or do you look for the shine in others? Perhaps there is a mindset that needs adjustment in yourself.

Black History Month

Those who’s eyes sparkle with pride in Black History Month, I applaud you for your strength and beauty in all you are. I am a better me because of your inspiration and I thank you for that. Those of you with quality of character, knowing who you are despite the many challenges along the way, celebrate like the joy you were meant to be. Know that there are many fully behind you of every color.

The struggles of Love’s Expressions

It’s Valentine’s Day Weekend

For many however, it seems to be filled with drama of miscommunication in what expressions of love can truly mean. Hearts are wounded and souls are cut where in general things are good, but…. Do you have a good foundation but….If you really believe you are soulmates or at least a foundation of a quality love and you are going through a struggle of views, ask yourself if you are holding any baggage in your hands when you are seeing your point of view.

Attack on your sincerity

You see it as harassment and an attack on your sincerity of the relationship. You don’t want to go down that hole of always feeling like you need to be on the defense. They should know how you feel and you shouldn’t be pushed into reminding them. That’s your boundary.

What they need

They see it as an emotional connection that their soul needs. Why should expressing that create a problem?! A soulmate or love feeds each other’s souls. How do they handle this boundary of communication? Would you really prefer they didn’t tell you their need? Is it better for them to keep that need inside and create a wound you don’t even realize exists? They are in a lose-lose situation. Where do they set the boundary of getting their needs met?

Perhaps….

Just perhaps you might see… If their need were for food, you would be upset if they stayed silent and went without. You would want to take care of them. Their soul needs food too, and you, because of their love for you, have the unique position to feed them this. Do you really rather they go hungry?

If you believe you are soulmates, or you simply love each other and are together – this may be the need that needs attention. If you’re not sure, it’s a good place to start. Make it a Happy Valentine’s Day, at least in the bond you share.

Who Are We?

Horrible example

Most Americans believe the events at the Capitol on January 6th were not an example of who we are. It was unacceptable and a horrible display for the world to see. Both left and right feel it was an attack on our Democracy. Many believe it crossed the line of protest and riot into domestic terrorism, with a leader that lit the match. The upcoming inauguration brings with it an unnerving fear seldom experienced in our country, and make no mistake, the world is watching.

Why it happened

What is it that made people who view themselves as patriotic, think that storming the Capitol was not only acceptable, but their duty to take action to stand up for their country? People from all statures around the country are being tracked down and arrested for taking part. There has been an observation that had it been protesters from the Black Lives Matter movement, it would have gone a different way. Indeed, it would have. The reason it was not handled the same way however, was not because they were white, but because too many in control of the actions needed to stop it, believed themselves that the election was stolen. A belief that has been shot down in multiple courts, even those with conservative judges. The facts have spoken. Our leaders need to accept that and voice it, in order to lead. The denial of that has proven to lead to chaos that can literally crumble our democracy as a whole.

What’s behind our democracy

The split in our country is as deep as the Grand Canyon and large enough to call it a great divide. The 2016 election was one that left one side stating “not my president”. Investigations were launched concerning the process and results. We were divided, yes, but we did not crumble. The other side said “we’ll show you how it’s done”. Their hopes were of making America great. Do you believe the last four years have been a good example of what you envisioned it would become? Now it is the other side coming about this week. They are now saying “let us show you what we can do”. Do they not have the same right to show you? That is simply how democracy works.

Who’s voice do we need

Now more than ever we need the right, especially Trump supporters, to stand up and lead with an example as a united nation to say let’s work together. You are the ones that will be listened to. You are the ones whose voice of calm can stop the storm that is brewing in our country. The extremists who descended on our Capitol will not listen to anything the left has to say. But you, can make a difference and we need you to do just that.

Show the world the integrity and character you pride yourself on, that we can work together, left and right; for there is no better way to eliminate your enemy then to make them your friend. We need you to show just what being The United States of America really means.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Today is a holiday of our making to celebrate one of the greatest leaders our country has produced. His voice still echoes through our land in quotes with dreams for a better future. “I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” Many years later, although we are not there yet, we have come far enough to put a black man as president that the world respected as a great leader (whether you agree or not) for not just one term, but both he was limited to hold. We still have a long way to go to fulfill our pledge of justice for all, but we have taken steps in that direction.

For those waving your confederate flags and feeling a spark of pride in the label white supremacist, make no mistake – we will not be going back. You have been defeated before and your attempt to create a civil war is simply treason, not patriotic. You need to examine who and what you are willing to sacrifice because if nothing else, history shows a civil war brings suffering to the majority of the country and brings about devastating destruction. That is not the vision of a great America.

The World is watching

The world is watching what we do next and this goes way beyond politics to the very core of what we are about. What will your actions say about the legacy you leave behind? Isn’t the duty of a true American to show we can come together united? We need to unite today rather than crumble tomorrow. John F. Kennedy was quoted as saying “Ask not what your country can do for you, but rather what you can do for your country”. What is your message for your country going to be?

Today we take note of a dream. Let’s keep working on that instead of crumbling tomorrow. You matter. Make your example count. For together we stand, divided we fall.

The Blessings of a Struggle

Reflect on the struggles

When you reflect on the struggles of the past, do you ever wonder about what would have helped you, or was there someone that was a Godsend to you? What did you do with that when it was no longer a struggle for you? Many organizations and support groups are founded on that premise. I found myself on the end of a struggles that became a humiliation. If you finish reading this (even if it’s out of pure curiosity), you will understand the share.

The Point of Struggle

I found myself short at the cash register of our local grocery store (not an uncommon thing for many) but after using 2 cards and my change, along with the pennies left behind by others, I still had to put back a package of Ramen Noodles. The epitome of humiliation as others looked on. I cried while walking home and asked God (we talk a lot) why he had allowed me to go through that. He answered me right away, knowing my feeling of failure. It was the only way he could show me what he wanted me to see.

Discovery Begins

There was a need in my community he wanted me to address. My call to action was planned before I even reached home. When I got my next (and it will be a continuing thing) I went to the same store, to the courtesy booth and purchased several of their gift cards and called the manager over and asked him to please give them to the cashiers to use when someone needs to put something back.

Why?

The Point

Because what if there is someone out there that is struggling and feels the humiliation of putting something back as the final straw of no hope? What if that small token can make them feel some of the good there still is and it is the nod they need to keep pushing on? My desire is for them to know they matter and help them keep a sense of hope.

Following His Purpose For Me

Please do not let your takeaway from this be how nice it was of me. It was just me listening to God’s direction. Sometimes he leads us where we don’t want to go for a purpose. All we have to do is ask him. He allowed it because he knew my response would not be anger at him, or cursing him, but rather questioning him. I am grateful he allowed me to serve that purpose.

Inspiration to Answer a Call

Let your takeaway be inspiration to watch for something you can do, from an experience that you might have (or have had) where you see it’s purpose. I know I missed this one more than once on that lesson.

We Really Are All In This Together

Written By Melody Belliveau With special thanks to Stephen De Sede for the encouragement to share it.

New Year’s Eve

The Threshold….

New year’s Eve is the in-between or doorway of an end and a beginning. A time for reflection of lessons to bring more hope for a brighter future. To examine the real why’s of our lives. Why we had the experiences we had and why we made the choices we made. Then we plan the choices we would like to make for the future. It’s the essence of why so many make a New Year’s Resolution. The test of them is developing a habit of them before they become a faded memory of promising change. It starts with a conscious effort that only succeeds when you put an energy of commitment behind it and feed it.

Instead of a typical Resolution list, perhaps some of these might help make your New Year brighter, and the more frequency you put into them, the brighter your year can be.

Each Day (or at least frequently)

Say thank you to God – even if it’s just for waking you up to another day. Beginning a day with gratitude can help you create an uplifted mindset right from the beginning of your day.

Learn something new – Even if it’s as simple as learning something new about your phone. If you have more time than that, there are podcasts, webinars and YouTube videos for everything from TEDx Talks to Energy Healing (Mind Valley has some great ones) and you can choose what resonates with you.

Remember something old – whether it’s as simple as a favorite song you haven’t heard in ages, or a precious moment with someone who will always have a special place in your heart.

Set boundaries of respect for yourself and include your self talk – defend you like you would a good friend. You need to believe you matter.

Do something that makes you feel accomplished – It can be as small as getting fully dressed (even though they won’t know on Zoom) or as in-depth as cleaning out your car or your closet. Make it enjoyable by putting on a playlist of songs you like. (everything goes better with music)

We spend so much time working for others that showing ourselves we matter is a task left off our to-do lists way to often. It is just as important to feed your soul as your job and even more important than your typical Resolution. Put more you into your coming year than just running the rat race of your life. Tell yourself you are worth it, because God believes you are, and so do I.

Happy New Year and God Bless!

Christmas 2020

Some of us know what it’s like this year:

To be too poor to afford Christmas presents or the traditional Christmas feast for those we love. More than ever before, many needed to depend on donations from others to keep the next generation believing in the magic of Christmas. They are grateful and bruised at the same time. But they are here, and there is always Hope for a brighter future. One where you look back, and find gratitude in the fact that you made it through. The lesson will be to pay it forward when you are no longer the one in need.

To be missing those who were here last year. The pain will be one that will not be ignored. But with that pain, comes the same intensity of love that is part of the legacy they leave behind, and will be always in your heart. There is no greater honor than a permanent place in your heart.

To be alone this year because of the risk that gathering poses. Many will have a digital presence only, without the warmth of the hugs they long for. But at least there are now many options of Zoom, FaceTime and Messenger video besides the simple phone calls of the past. Perhaps reaching out to someone who may be alone as well can warm your heart too.

When the calls have been made and you are alone once more, treat yourself to a little celebration of your own. Spend the time being your own best friend. If you had a friend who was exactly like you (so you know what they would enjoy) what ways would you wish for them to enjoy the holiday? How would you want them to treat themselves? Speak It To Yourself

To be in the military, just know that you really do matter. You will be in more people’s prayers today than most days of the year. You are on their minds and in their posts reminding others that you are there. Take comfort in that and let its warmth comfort your soul.

We all have a web of feelings this year. It’s not a typical Christmas by far. Feel what you need to feel; sadness, pain, and whatever else this year has brought, but please remember to include Hope and know that you matter. I pray that if you are reading this, you believe it is not by accident, you were meant to see this message. Take it in and let it feed your soul. I believe you are loved by God and my prayer for you is for you to know it too. That is the true meaning of what this holiday is all about.

Merry Christmas & God Bless You All!

Real Service

Regardless of what circumstances you are in, poor or wealthy, disabled or healthy, there is always someone you can help.

This is focused on Veterans

The holidays are upon us and people are starting to feel something Veterans and their families have felt intensely with no notice from us. They are apart from loved ones, sacrificing time in their lives to keep us safe. Can you do something besides waving a flag? Of course you can! You choose…..

Organizations

The above video (please watch it) lists numerous organizations you can contact and offer assistance to, in whatever way and for however amount of effort and time you decide. You choose…..

sheltersuit.com

If you are Blessed with money, you can purchase these and donate one or more to a Veteran’s organization or even a homeless Veteran sleeping in a cardboard box on the city streets. It could make the difference between life and death and it could have the impact of giving them hope that maybe, just maybe, they do matter after all.

If not the suit, then the Woobie, available on Amazon for instance, is a lined, wet-weather poncho that gives both physical comfort and shows their sacrifice at the same time. Ask a Vet you know about them. You choose…..

Can’t financially do that? How about creating a care package? Contact a Veteran’s Administration for a list of needed items and addresses. You choose…..

Can’t do that? How about buying some stamps and mailing some platoons an encouraging letter for Christmas and maybe even enclosing some stamps for them as gifts. You choose…..

If you would rather donate time, volunteers are always in need for a variety of tasks. Have an organizing talent? Get some companies to sponsor a drive for the above options or come up with your own ideas. The possibilities are only as limited as you make them. You choose…..

Not a doer? Say a prayer and then share this post. You never know who you could reach that could run with the ideas. But choose…..

“I don’t even like company coming anymore” says one mother of an overseas soldier, “anytime a car comes up the driveway, I’m scared it will be a Chaplin. It’s a mother’s worst nightmare”. There is always something we can choose to do to show our support.

These are just examples of what you can do to help, and ways to do it. They matter. Let them know that. You have the power. They choose for you, so you have a choice to choose for them. So choose…..

Serenity

No sugar coating….

No sugar coating, many people are hurting this year for Thanksgiving. The dark clouds of the struggles are the main thoughts in much of America today. The celebrations will undoubtedly be different, some by the absence of those who have passed, some from sheer lack of money for the food traditions serves, and most from following safety guidelines that prevent them from holding large traditional gatherings. You can probably relate to at least one of these scenario’s.

“Accept the things I cannot change”

There are still Blessings. The loss of a loved one can bring awareness of how those that still remain really matter to you. It makes you appreciate that connection you have with them. We are made painfully aware that tomorrow is not promised. Words that once would have sounded corny upon expressing, now seem vital to say. That is a serious Blessing. It is an opportunity to change this for the better and eliminate regrets later on.

“The courage to change the things I can”

Mindset is the basis of your actions. Will you emit overwhelming sadness and despair today, or will you focus on and express appreciation for the Blessings that remain?

“The wisdom to know the difference”

We can’t always change the circumstances of our lives, but we can choose how to react to them and we can make today count in the moments that turn into memories forever locked in our hearts. Today is that opportunity to feel the serenity of love that surrounds you still. Notice the Blessings and soak them in. Love one another. Happy Thanksgiving and God Bless!

The Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference – Reinhold Niebuhr

Falling Through The Cracks

In society frequently….

The phrase is used in society frequently to bring awareness to those who have been overlooked that would otherwise go unnoticed. During this pandemic, there is such a group that have indeed fallen through the cracks. They need our support now, more than ever. Instead, they have been pushed even more into isolation.

The difficult skill of reading lips….

Our hearing-impaired community have been plunged into an even more silent world. After they have learned the difficult skill of reading lips, they are now facing a world of masks. The mandates of face coverings for safety of the public due to the pandemic now leave them with not only an issue of hearing, but one of sight as well. Many are no longer able to venture out and function in the world. It is no longer a place of adapted communication. The majority of those they see are now unreadable.

Sign language is….

Although sign language is something we have all heard of, unless you have frequent direct contact with someone that is hearing impaired, you probably would not have learned any of it. In general, schools do not usually offer it, never mind mandate it, like math and English. This is in spite of the fact that, above all others, it is actually a universal language. Talk about falling through the cracks.

Fears and anxiety lead to….

They face hardships securing employment because of their special needs, as well as constant judgement and criticism over speech impediments that are the result of the hearing loss. They often feel alone and insecure of themselves, trying to navigate through society. Fears and anxiety lead to mental health issues that are compacted by a lack of resources, such as interpreters and education in their communities. Many are forced to struggle with disability as the only way of survival after facing too many roadblocks in their attempts to be productive members of society.

Stereotyping of false beliefs….

They struggle with stereotyping of false beliefs that include thinking they have less mental capabilities, that they lack technology skills or are unable to drive a motor vehicle. Some make the mistake of believing that speaking loudly to them helps, when in reality it can lead to embarrassment when you have now loudly put their limitation on display

Each and every one of us has a purpose and they need the help of their community to fulfill theirs. We can all do our part in raising awareness in our communities through organizations and ways we can show our support.

It costs nothing….

We can learn some simple sign language words and phrases with an easy web search of YouTube videos or other free platforms and then teach them to others starting with family and friends. It costs nothing but a fraction of your time and attention.

You’re literally helping others….

Secondly, purchase face shields or clear face masks in support of those that have mastered lip reading. Some are so skilled at it, you may never have known they were hearing impaired. There are manufacturers who even donate a portion of their products in bulk to selected organizations. Simply purchasing from them literally helps others.

Encourage your community….

If you are an activist, maybe even encourage your community to set sign language as part of the school curriculum or even get others in your community to purchase clear masks as well. If your local library or other organization does webinars, perhaps they could include sign language as one to offer.

What will you do….

Now that you are aware, what will you do to help spread the awareness or show support for those in your community? We really are, all in this together!
